A traditional New Year's dish — mochi and seasonal vegetables and meat simmered together in dashi. One of the most regionally diverse foods in Japan: the dashi, fillings, and even the shape of the mochi change completely depending on where you are. In Tokyo (where Kaa-chan is from), it's typically a clear soy sauce-based broth with chicken, komatsuna greens, and grilled square mochi. In Kansai, round mochi is simmered in a smooth, mild white miso broth.
